Brighton's Lanes

One of Brighton's famous areas is the network of old fisherman's cottages known as The Lanes. The cottages were built close together, with overhanging roofs, for protection against the many storms that batter the town.

Brighton's Lanes are located in the heart of Brighton and are divided into two halves 'The North Lanes' & 'The South Lanes'. The two area are separated by North Street which runs from Queen Street, which is where Brighton's train station in located and continues down to St James Street.

The two areas boast a very unique feel with shops that are one offs selling unusual and nice items. You will not see any high street chain stores in The Lanes as the shop owners are independent traders which makes The Lanes a great place to meander for a few hours.

The South Lanes has a slightly more up market feel as you will find a higher concentration of jewelry shops and high end clothes shops and antique shops. There is also a higher concentration of restaurants and cafés in The South Lanes.
The South Lanes also boasts what is believed to be Brighton's oldest pub 'The Druids Head'. Which has always been a very popular venue during it's long life.

The North Lanes has a more Bohemian feel about it with many of the shops selling second hand clothing and old vinyl records. There are also some really interesting places to eat in the little roads in The North Lanes. Some of the items for sale in these shops you will find hard to find any where else and most of it is at very reasonable prices. There are also several art gallery / shops in the North Lanes featuring work by local artists.

The Druid's Head is reputedly the oldest pub in Brighton, which any fule kno from the ye olde worlde flagged stone floor and welcome lack of bright flashing electrical equipment.
